I do not have any personal experience with buffalo, but I am reading up on them and here's what I've learned so far:
1. From 1982 to 1999, buffalo injured far more people than grizzly bears did. Grizzlies injured 32 people, including 2 deaths. Buffalo injured 81 people, including 2 deaths.
2. Bull buffalo are responsible for over 90% of all injuries to humans by buffalo.
3. Buffalo have been known to charge without any overt behavioral warning.
4. If you're charged by a buffalo, don't run. Fall face down on the ground, and don't move. If you run, the buffalo will probably chase you down.
5 Avoiding trouble with buffalo is easy: Keep your distance. Don't crowd them. Yellowstone authorities tell people to stay at least 75 feet away from all buffalo, but at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park people are told to keep back 100 yards.
