What You Should Know Before You Buy

Sucia Island, San Juans

There is an important principle to remember when you purchase a kayak: Kayaks are like shoes. There are shoes for running, hiking, working, etc., and they come in hundreds of styles, sizes and colors. Only a certain size shoe will fit your foot. Buying a kayak is similiar. In fact, its fair to say that a paddler "wears" a kayak as much as s/he sits in one. Take your time, and don't make saving money your priority! Make buying the right kayak your priority and save your money until you can afford to get the one you'll use. Here is a short list of questions to guide your decision:

Do you intend to use the kayak for overnight camping?

  • If you're going to be camping you'll want bulkheads in your kayak.

Will you be paddling in inclement weather (wind, rain)?

  • Traditional kayaks keep you dry and warm.
  • Sit-on styles expose you to the weather.

Will you be paddling around ocean or river currents?

  • Seriously consider a rudder or skag.

Which do you love more: kayaks or paddling kayaks?

  • Kayaks are beautiful, but they lose their luster with heavy use.
  • You have options of wood, fiberglass and plastic.

What is your age?

  • Rudders are great for people over 50!!

How comfortable is the kayak?

  • Make comfort a priority (just like you do with shoes).

Did you "test drive" the kayak before purchasing it?

  • Take the kayak for a paddle before you make any final decisions.

Did you visit the September Paddle Fest in Port Townsend?

  • This is a great place to meet people and find the right model kayak for you (not to mention the plethora of equipment and experience).
